Imagine racing through city streets at 150 mph, in a car of your own making. Thats basically the premise for Apex. now don't get confused, you don't actually design your own racer. You just bought your own garage, with plans on starting a racing company, your head mechanic finds some plans on concept cars, using those plans you build your first car (3 different car choices are presented) a Roadster, win enough races, and the general public will start buying your cars, allowing you to upgrade your own concept car and then letting you start on the next level of concept cars - sports cars then race cars - then supercars. There are about 15 to 20 races in between each upgrade, and various *one-time* races mixed in. For instance, one of the one-time races involved you racing against other police car hopefuls, the one winning would sell 25 cars to a local police force.
The graphics in this game are unbelievable, beautiful scenery, highly detailed cars, sun glare off of the roads makes it highly realistic. There is car damage, but it does not affect performance at all, bastards. There are also a lot of cars, all of them you can race with in the Arcade mode (after you unlock them in Dream mode of course) but you can only play with the concept cars during single player (Dream). Another cool option in this game, you pick out your own name for your car line, and a decal to represent you. Later on after winning many races, you will start to see some of the billboards on the racetracks sport your companies name and logo.
The sound leaves a lot to be desired, the in-game sound effects get the job done. But as for the actual soundtrack, if you have ever stood outside a dance club before, you can hear and feel the throbbing bass, but not much more. Thats exactly what the music is like, hardly any treble, and the bass effects gets all muffled and dirty sounding.
Controlling your car is basic and easy, in fact, this game is not much of a challenge, out of 60 races that I have been through so far, I have never spun out, and I have 49 1st place wins, 10 second place wins, and 1 3rd place. So if you are a beginner racer, I highly suggest this game. If you are looking for a real challenge, I doubt this is your game.
Overall I would rate this game as a 87%, the graphics and controls, floor me.
